Our Approach
Rebuilding readiness for learning through personalised, staged support
Many pupils who struggle to attend school are not unwilling to learn — they are overwhelmed by anxiety, low confidence, or previous negative experiences of education. Attempting academic work too early can increase distress and reinforce avoidance.
Back on Track Pathways uses a staged, relational approach that addresses underlying barriers first, helping pupils rebuild the emotional stability and confidence needed to engage with learning again.
Support is delivered 1:1 and tailored to each individual’s needs, strengths, and goals.
Personalised & Flexible Support
No two pupils are the same. Every programme is adapted to the individual, recognising that barriers to education are often complex and interrelated.
Sessions are typically delivered in calm community settings that reduce pressure and allow pupils to engage more comfortably than in traditional classroom environments.
Stage 1 — Engagement & Emotional Readiness
The first priority is to establish trust and reduce anxiety. Without this foundation, progress is rarely sustainable.
Sessions focus on helping pupils feel safe, understood, and capable. Evidence-informed techniques drawn from coaching, CBT, and NLP principles are integrated in a practical, age-appropriate way through activities rather than formal therapy.
Activities may include physical, creative, or goal-based tasks designed to:
• Develop emotional regulation skills
• Increase confidence and self-belief
• Challenge unhelpful thinking patterns
• Improve motivation and resilience
• Rebuild trust in adults and learning
Stage 2 — Reintroducing Learning
Once pupils are more settled and engaged, academic elements are gradually introduced using meaningful, real-world contexts rather than traditional classroom approaches.
This helps pupils experience success without the pressure that previously led to disengagement.
Support may include:
• Functional maths through practical activities
• Reading and writing linked to relevant topics
• Problem-solving and communication skills
• Development of learning behaviours and study skills
The emphasis is on rebuilding confidence with learning itself, not simply covering curriculum content.
Where appropriate, learners may work towards recognised outcomes such as ASDAN Personal & Social Development awards or Functional Skills in English and Maths.
Stage 3 — Preparation for Reintegration
As confidence and engagement improve, the focus shifts towards readiness for return to education or transition to an appropriate next step.
Support may include:
• Building tolerance for structured learning
• Developing routines and independence
• Addressing fears about school environments
• Increasing persistence and participation
• Liaising with schools to support transition planning
The goal is sustainable re-engagement with education, not long-term dependence on alternative provision.
A Focus on Positive Outcomes
Back on Track Pathways aims to help pupils move from avoidance and distress to confidence, engagement, and a clear pathway forward.
Progress is measured through changes in emotional wellbeing, engagement, independence, and readiness for learning, as well as development of core skills where appropriate.
