Alternative Provision & Inclusion Support

Re-engaging children and young people with education

Back on Track Pathways provides specialist 1:1 support for pupils who are unable to access mainstream education due to anxiety, emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA), SEMH needs, low confidence, or other barriers to learning.

Our programmes focus on rebuilding emotional readiness for learning first, before gradually reintroducing academic work in a supportive, real-world context. The aim is to help pupils regain confidence, engagement, and the skills needed to return to education successfully.

Male Teenager

🔶 WHO WE SUPPORT

We work with children and young people who:

• Are not attending school or attend very irregularly
• Experience anxiety or emotionally based school avoidance
• Present with SEMH needs
• Have low confidence or poor self-esteem
• Are at risk of exclusion
• Are awaiting placement or transition
• Have experienced difficulties within school
• Have EHCPs or additional needs affecting access to education

Each programme is tailored to the individual, recognising that barriers to learning are often complex and require a flexible, compassionate approach.

Confident Young Girl

🔶 OUR APPROACH — Rebuilding Readiness for Learning

Many pupils who struggle to attend school are not unwilling to learn — they are overwhelmed by the emotional demands associated with education. Attempting academic work too early can reinforce anxiety and avoidance.

Back on Track Pathways uses a staged approach:

First: building trust, confidence, and emotional stability
Then: gradually reintroducing learning through meaningful activities
Finally: preparing pupils for successful reintegration into education

Sessions integrate evidence-informed coaching approaches, including CBT and NLP principles, alongside creative, physical, and goal-based activities to maximise engagement.

🔶 FUNCTIONAL LEARNING & SKILL DEVELOPMENT

As confidence grows, academic elements are introduced through real-life contexts rather than traditional classroom tasks.

This may include:

• Functional maths through practical activities
• Reading and writing linked to meaningful topics
• Problem-solving and communication skills
• Development of learning behaviours and study skills

Where appropriate, learners may work towards recognised outcomes such as ASDAN Personal & Social Development awards or Functional Skills in English and Maths.

🔶 OUTCOMES & REINTEGRATION

The overall aim is to help pupils move from avoidance and distress to confidence, engagement, and readiness for education.

Progress may include:

• Reduced anxiety and improved emotional regulation
• Increased confidence and self-esteem
• Greater engagement with learning
• Development of functional numeracy and literacy
• Improved independence and resilience
• Preparation for return to school or next placement

Success is measured by meaningful progress towards sustainable re-engagement with education.
